Schools all face the same challenge of attracting and retaining quality and motivated teachers. Here are 5 simple steps to attracting quality teachers, but also retaining quality teachers in this hugely competitive market.

  1. Competitive Salary

One major reason for the current teacher shortage is the salary compared with other occupations. A competitive salary is proven to be associated with reduced turnover rates and, as a result, lower numbers of teachers choosing to leave.

  2. Employee Benefits

Employee benefit goes beyond just salary. Teachers need to feel professionally respected and feel entitled to be treated as those in other professions with added benefits that help them to function better at work. These benefits might include Health Care, Sports membership and travel allowance. Teachers will commit if they feel appreciated and valued.

  3. Environment

Well-designed buildings, pleasant surroundings and good resources can lead to better concentration, motivation and self-esteem. The working environment wants to lift your spirits with the ‘tools’ in place for you do a good job.

  4. Supportive culture

Once teachers are in your school the culture makes a big difference regarding whether they choose to stay or leave. They need to feel supported and appreciated, with there personal well-being and workload being addressed.

  5. Promote professional and personal development opportunities

Teachers who are thinking about moving will often ask whether they will have the opportunity to attend further training. Newly qualified teachers, in particular, will be interested in professional and personal development opportunities. These opportunities to develop themselves professionally may include additional time for research, collaboration, coaching or mentoring, and classroom visits.
