Everyone seems to associate an interview with applying for a new role, but what about ‘flipping’ and using the approach for staff who are already established in their role. Here are an example of five key questions to engage and motivate staff in their role.

  1. "What do you like about your job?" The interview starts with a positive tone to gain an overview of satisfaction and what parts of the job they enjoy and want to develop.
  2. "Could you describe something that has recently gone well?" A time to focus on the positive experiences and what can be used to repeat this success in the future.
  3. "Do you feel your skills are being utilised?" An opportunity to share personal strengths that possibly were not known before, that could be potentially better used within the organisation.
  4. "Do you feel you get recognized for your work?" A time to gauge frustration and the potential impact of retaining that member of staff.
  5. "Do you feel like you are treated with respect?" Culture is key to the success of an organisation. A lack of mutual respect is a negative cultural trait. Respect is a key in overall employee engagement, and its absence is a contributor to employees leaving.
