The Department for Education has recently published new guidance for school leaders, teachers and organisations that provide professional development for teachers.
"Effective professional development for teachers is a core part of securing effective teaching." (page 3)
The guide sets out the Department for Education meaning of professional development, the standard, and the five specific areas the stand covers. These areas specify that professional development:
- Should have a clear focus on improving and evaluating pupil outcomes
- Should be underpinned by robust evidence and expertise
- Should include collaboration and expert challenge
- Programmes should be sustained over time
- Must be prioritised by school leadership
To be used alongside the Teachers' Standards, the guide describes that the above areas of the standard all need to be focused upon to make sure professional development is implemented and effective.
