Who to see at AOC HR 2016

The AoC HR Conference continues to offer thought-provoking ideas to support HR professionals nationwide by giving them the opportunity to come together in one place to debate common challenges, share practice and identify solutions to both operational and strategic matters.

Can colleges use the law to future proof

Samantha Clark - @clark_samantha

Samantha Clark is an associate solicitor at Irwin Mitchell. She is considerably experience in all areas of employment law. As a highly experienced Employment Tribunal advocate she also advises on employment aspects of corporate transactions.

Samantha Clark will be talking about how employment law and the legislative framework used by colleges should not inhibit organisational responsiveness.

The law should be used as a tool to enable colleges to achieve their objectives and sustain services for future progression.

Warren O’Donovan, Pete Haynes and Musrat Zaman will be talking from a college perspective who have recently been through the area review process or are preparing to do so. They will share feedback on the practicalities of the process as well as core considerations HR departments should take into account for the future.

Warren O’Donovan is the human resources director for Salford City College and has worked in HR since 1997.

Pete Haynes is the assistant principal at Solihull College.

Musrat Zaman is the director of human resources at Lambeth College, working since the 1990s in HR and 3 years in the FE sector.

The past is not always a guide to the future - Future skills for leaders of colleges

Debbie Wilshire is a facilitator at AoC Create and will be discussing the current educational landscape, previously successful leadership skills and experiences may not necessarily be sufficient for the future.

Speaking alongside is Ulysses Lyon the principal at King Edward IV College.

This is an opportunity to consider the skills and qualities required to meet further needs, and to explore how practical leadership development in colleges might be shaped.

Consider how the leadership development in your establishment might response to these needs, as well as discuss your own thoughts with colleagues in an interactive and dynamic environment.

Paul Taylor is the Chief Operating Officer at the Manchester College and will be speaking alongside Karen Sanders, Group Director of Human Resources at Activate Learning, about how the role of HR is changing in the college sector.

The topics to be discussed include how HR can service different establishment structures across different locations. Be able to move away from HR being predominantly compliance driven. Understand mutual benefit for mutual contribution.
