Five tips to ensure value for money from your college CPD

Managing CPD and achieving value for money are significant challenges for any college. Here we identify how our software CollegeiP ensures that you are offering professional development that meets the needs of your staff. You can be confident of this through needs analysis, a self-assessment report and staff recording the impact of the CPD they engage in. This can all take place within our software.

CollegeiP is the simplest and most efficient way to manage lecturer and staff appraisals. CPD is huge part of driving improvement and the appraisal process. Here, we identify how CollegeiP ensures value for money and makes the whole process of CPD more efficient.

1. Understanding need

CollegeiP supports this as every member of staff, regardless of their role, has their own secure online professional portfolio. The portfolio holds all elements of performance management information. Namely, self/peer reviews against professional standards, objectives and ongoing performance feedback from observations. Development needs are further identified by the individual, their line manager and colleagues through 360 degree reviews, observations and other feedback.

Once CollegeiP holds this information, whole college, faculty, group and individual needs can be analysed through the powerful reporting engine.

2. Matching individual need to wider college priorities

The college self-assessment report is built within CollegeiP and individual priorities feed into it for a whole college view. Once the improvement plan is developed, its priorities then feed back into individual portfolios. This means that staff can identify what development they need to support whole college growth.

3. Measuring impact

In identifying their development needs, staff then request relevant professional development and state ts expected impact on their practice. This all takes place within CollegeiP which enables CPD requests to be analysed. Appropriate college wide development can be allocated to staff, individually or in bulk, by middle leaders and the Human Resources department..

Once the professional development takes place, CollegeiP prompts staff to record its impact. This happens directly after the CPD and at pre-defined periods in the future. Impact can then be analysed to ensure value for money.

4. Developing internal CPD

When staff skills are reviewed, strengths and areas for development are identified (see the radar diagram below). From the skills matrices, you can develop in house CPD sessions to enhance any collective skills gaps. Sessions can be led by talented staff or alternatively coaching or mentoring could be established. CPD opportunities can be promoted via CollegeiP for staff to book or they can be centrally allocated.

Developing subject networks and research based projects is easier with CollegeiP. Colleagues can work together in a secure online environment to share resources and progress. The CollegeiP mentoring area enables coaches to support colleagues away from college. This helps to make face to face meetings more focused.

5. Making tracking entitlement easier

If you offer staff an annual entitlement of professional development, this is easily tracked within CollegeiP. As staff sign up and log their professional development, including mentoring, the hours automatically accumulate. It is easy for them to see how many hours they are receiving as well as for you to analyse and report across your college. CollegeiP’s powerful reporting engine means can analyse and cross reference any piece of information within the system and display it graphically. We are proud to have developed such a comprehensive system that ensures value for money from your CPD.
