As you will be aware Ofsted have recently appointed Amanda Spielman as the new chief inspector. She will of course replace Sir Michael Wilshaw who has been in the position since January 2012. There has been a lot of speculation around this appointment and we'd love to know your thoughts, how do you think it might impact the inspection process?
Looking at the facts Ms Spielman has never been a teacher but she is currently the chair of exams regulator Ofqual, she founded the successful academy chain Ark, and has strong leadership experience over years of management.
Nicky Morgan has stated; “From helping to set up one of the country’s top academy chains, to acting as a council member for the Institute of Education, to overseeing our ambitious qualification reform programme, Amanda has extensive experience at the front line of the education system, making her uniquely qualified to take up this important role.”
However, teacher unions believe she lacks relevant experience to lead the schools watchdog. Despite these attacks, the Education Secretary, insisted Ms Spielman has the credentials because of her “extensive experience at the frontline of the education system”.
Ms Spielman worked within the chartered accountancy profession before becoming the Chair of Ofqual in 2011. In 2014 she said she found working as a regulator more “interesting and satisfying” than she had ever imagined. In addition, Ms Spielman spent 5 years as an adviser to Ark’s international arm, as well as being the research and development director between 2004 and 2011 for Ark schools.
Ms Spielman previously held various roles in corporate finance, corporate strategy and business planning at Kleinwort Benson and other organisations for more than 15 years. She holds a Masters of Arts in mathematics and law from Cambridge University, as well as a Masters of Arts in comparative education from the Institute of Education.
She is a member of various educational groups and associations. Her most significant being a council and audit committee member at Brunel University, as well as the director of Floreat Education. Plus she was also a council member at the Institute of Education.
